    1. Clemence Dane was the pseudonym of Winifred Ashton

    2. I thought this had many good things about it, but it did tend to ramble on and on, and while I can see why she stayed in the one viewpoint, this did get a bit tedious.Realised that it is actually pretty much what is defined, at least from Henry James, as a loose baggy monster, which is ironic given that it is doing the H James plot of young person from New World confronting the Old (even if Jacy is, technically, British citizen by paternal descent he was brought up entirely in USA)

    3. Thicko thick. Apparently she spent seven years writing it from her home in Covent Garden where her windows looked straight down into the heart of it all the 30 years including the 1930s on. Los of dialogue, conversations and interactions between a British theatrical family, meant to be a fairly successful one. Interesting to think of how different this novel would be set in modern times now.

    4. Interesting character study, but either very dated or a too stylized view of reality. Fascinating in a way.
