    1. I am a former elementary school teacher with published books for children and young adults I write nonfiction, biography, humorous, contemporary, and historical fiction for elementary and middle grade readers, and historical and contemporary young adult fiction. You can read about me at karencoombs or follow my blog about my book Bully at Ambush Corner at bullyatambushcorner

    2. I've decided to make up my own category of book to describe this book. It is now titled "character centered historical fiction/romance." I fell in love with these types of books when I read the entire "Little House on the Prairie" series the summer before 4th grade. I like the historical fiction parts of it, but I prefer to live history through an interesting main character. This book was not too heavy on the history part but it was well enough researched that I really enjoyed it. This isn't the [...]

    3. It's 1620, and fourteen-year-old Sarah hates the New World the moment she sets foot on it. An orphan, Sarah longs to return to England, and she decides to save up enough money for the journey. The other settlers discourage her, telling her she should either marry or become a servant. Sarah struggles to hold on to her dreams over more than two years as she matures and slowly begins to think of Virginia as her home, even falling in love. But violence and tragedy shatter her world, and she must sta [...]

    4. Set in pre-Pilgrim colonial America, this is a story of powerful character development. A girl finds herself alone in the new world after all her loved ones die. Reluctant to be there in the first place, she is determined to earn her way back home to London, that is until her efforts earn her the love of the land and the community. This is a story about how trials are indeed a part of life, but how you go on in spite of them, and sometimes because of them, and how life can still hold joy, even a [...]

    5. A great historical novel about a young girl who comes to colonial Virginia as an indentured servant. This was my favorite novel as a teen girl!

    6. I read this when I was a teen and loved it then. Rereading it now did not disappoint. While this seems like a young adult romance novel, it actually is more a story of growing up. Yes there is romance but it's more a part of the growing up process for Sarah rather than the focus of the novel, which I appreciate. I enjoy a bit of romance but when it becomes more the point of the story they usually escalate it more than necessary.Rating: PG 13Reasoning: Violence, this features an attack by native A [...]

    7. Not a fabulous, thought-catching book, but it was a good story--more for a young-adult or junior reader. Interesting to read about the first settlers in Virginia and the experiences they went through--sicknesses, Indian attacks, etc. I'm grateful for the blessings I have!

    8. The story was going along fine and then all of a sudden its violent. A little sudden for me. It ended well though.
